The Pastor's Pen Moving Ever Onward |
In writing this last Pastor’s Pen to all of you, I am hearing the hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers” in my head. We are always marching with the cross of Jesus ever in front of us, living and moving in what God is doing in and around us today. It is my time to move on and release you to Pastors Phil and Leigh to continue to march beside you into what is next.
I have been honored and blessed to serve here for the past 9 years. You have necessarily said good-bye to some long-standing ministries and birthed new ministries. You have weathered the changes that came from the COVID-19 pandemic, learning to use new technology and new ways to be the church. You have said “Well Done, good and faithful servants” to many who had been long term and active members of the congregation while you have welcomed new members to the congregation. It has been a journey of death and resurrection as we celebrated Easter mornings at the lakeshore, as never once did the sun (or Son) not shine on us over the Green Mountains and across Lake Champlain welcoming what is next.
And I know you are still becoming more, because God is always faithful to God’s church. I pray that you will love boldly, serve joyfully and be led courageously into many more years of ministry; for what is a community church unless it cares for and loves its community, both near and far.
May God’s grace continue to move in each of you as I bid you farewell with love, thanks, gratitude and joy!

Pastoral Transition: The Covenantal Relationship of Clergy
Pastoral transition is a difficult time in the life of any church as well as for departing and incoming clergy. But clergy hold a sacred covenantal relationship with one another to not interfere with one another’s ministry. This is most important during the time of clergy transition. As part of the transition process, there can be no ambiguity in our relationship, so I am including this required information again this month.
- Effective on July 1, 2025, I will immediately cease all pastoral counseling and pastoral visitation with all members, families and those associated with Peru Community Church.
- I will not return to officiate or attend any baptisms, weddings, funerals for those associated with Peru Community Church. Declining such invitations to any participation is my responsibility as past clergy to maintain clear boundaries in my relationship with you. Please do not ask or pressure your current pastor to include or invite me in any of these services or events.
-
- I ask that you give me time and space to embrace my new congregation and ask you to be grace-filled with Pastors Phil and Leigh as they bring new and gifted leadership to you.
While this may seem unnecessary, rash, painful or perhaps foreign to some of you, this is the sacred covenantal relationship clergy share with one another. For those I may have hurt during my tenure, I ask for your forgiveness. I ask you to set aside any grievances so the church can move onward. It is important to “let go” and “soldier on” continuing your long-standing and fruit-filled ministry. |

PENTECOST - June 8, 2025
Another high holy day of the Christian calendar. Called by many the birthday of the church, Pentecost represents a passing of the mantle of sorts—from the Incarnate Christ to the ever-present Spirit, the reminder of the God within, the sustainer, the teacher, the strengthener. Pentecost is a day of celebration for all that God has done and is doing within the life of the church. - Discipleship Ministries, UMC

Reflections on the Upper NY UMC Annual Conference By Mary Jo Juneau |
I decided to attend the Northern NY UMC Conference because I felt it was my duty as a council member. I didn’t expect it to be interesting—or fun—but to my surprise, it was both. If given the opportunity, I would definitely go again.
When asked what surprised me most, several things came to mind:
1. Bishop Héctor Burgos Núñez – Energetic, uplifting, and even great at line dancing! 2. The worship services – Deeply moving and powerful. 3. Conversations with others – It was eye-opening to hear that many churches are facing the same struggles with membership and attendance. 4. Ministries supported by our giving – I hadn’t fully understood how essential ministry shares are in supporting impactful programs across the conference.
A sobering moment was learning that twelve churches in our conference closed this year. This underscored one of the main themes of the conference: the importance of community engagement. We need to step outside our buildings and connect with those around us. This means listening to, including, and walking alongside others, while also standing up as a movement for social justice and climate awareness.
Several important resolutions were passed during the conference, including:
· Making a stranger feel welcome · Identifying and opposing apartheid in the Holy Land · Designating Harkness UMC as a historical site in honor of Dr. Georgia Harkness · Petitions to invite all to experience the love of Christ · Endorsing the NYS Poor People’s Campaign and the Labor-Religion Coalition of NYS statement
There was more accomplished than I can summarize here, so if anyone would like additional details, please feel free to reach out. I have a copy of the conference workbook and would be happy to share information. |
A Lesson at the Red Light By Jonathan Side |
Today, while stopped at a red light near the hospital on my way to a physical therapy appointment, I found myself thinking, "This traffic is ridiculous."
“If only,” I thought, people could just drive properly—then we’d all get to our destinations on time, arrive safely, and maybe even be happier.
But then another thought came to mind.
Maybe that guy who cut someone off is racing to the hospital because his wife is in labor with their first child. Maybe he just got a phone call saying his father had a stroke and is being rushed in for treatment. Maybe his son fell off the swing at recess and broke his leg, and the ambulance is on its way with him.
That’s when I realized: sometimes, life throws us moments like these—not to frustrate us, but to teach us something deeper. A chance to shift perspective.
Because here’s the truth: We own our thoughts. We choose the path—positive or negative. And we can help others see things differently too.
So here’s my challenge to you: Be intentionally positive for just ten minutes today. Or better yet, try it for an hour. Look for the negative around you—not to feed into it, but to flip it. Help someone see a different perspective.
You’ll be surprised how good it feels. And don’t forget to smile— God is watching you. |

An Invitation from Pastor Phil & Pastor Leigh |
Greetings Friends,
Pastor Leigh and I are incredibly excited to begin ministry with you on July 6th.
As we begin this new journey together, we would like to invite all in the congregation and community to "Getting to Know Us / Visioning" Sessions on either Thursday, July 17th or Thursday, July 31st at 6 p.m. Our hope is that you can attend one of these meetings.
We will meet outside by the gazebo in the town park behind the Fellowship Center. (Bring outdoor chairs.) If it rains, the plan will be to meet in the Chapel in the Fellowship Center.
At these gatherings, Leigh and I will share a little bit about ourselves, ask some questions about your dreams and visions for this congregation, and help each of us get to know you better.
We will finish our gatherings at 7:30 p.m.
Blessings, Pastor Phil Richards |
