From Our Pastors Fall Is Here—and We Are in Full Swing! |
Dear Friends,
The season has shifted. The crisp mornings, the turning leaves, and the golden light of October remind us that change is always in the air. Fall carries with it both a sense of homecoming and a reminder of God’s ongoing creation. Just as the trees release their leaves, we, too, are invited to let go of what no longer gives life and make room for God’s renewing Spirit.
Here at the church, fall means we are in full swing—our ministries, small groups, worship series, and community outreach are alive with energy. What a joy it is to see familiar faces returning, new folks joining in, and the Spirit weaving us together in this season of gratitude and growth.
As a Christian community, we know that faith is not static. Like the seasons, it moves, stretches, and deepens. October gives us space to reflect on how we are called to live faithfully in this moment:
• In worship, we root ourselves in the Gospel’s message of love, justice, and mercy. • In fellowship, we build relationships that nurture and strengthen us for the journey. • In service, we extend compassion to neighbors near and far, bearing witness to God’s kin-dom of peace.
This season, I invite you to take a deep breath of that cool autumn air and ask: What is God stirring in me? What am I being called to release, and what new life am I being invited to embrace?
Thank you for the many ways you bring your gifts, presence, and passion to our shared ministry. May October’s beauty remind us that God is ever-creating, ever-inviting us into lives of deeper faith, courage, and joy.
With gratitude for each of you, Pastors Phil and Leigh |

Oct 5 – Luke 17:5–10 – Faith Like a Mustard Seed World Communion Sunday ➡️ “Got doubts? Feel like your faith is too small? Turns out, even the tiniest seed of faith can grow into something life-changing. This Sunday we’ll dig into the power of small beginnings. Come join us at 9 a.m. for worship, good conversation, and a community that believes little things really do matter.”
Oct 12 – Luke 17:11–19 – Ten Healed, One Returned ➡️ “Gratitude has this way of changing how we see everything. This Sunday we’ll talk about healing, thankfulness, and why pausing to say ‘thank you’ is actually a spiritual practice. Worship with us at 9 a.m.—we’ll save you a seat and share the joy.”
Oct 19 – Luke 18:1–8 – The Persistent Widow ➡️ “Life isn’t always fair, but giving up isn’t an option. Jesus tells a story about a widow who just wouldn’t quit until she got justice. It’s a reminder that persistence matters, especially when we’re working for what’s right. Join us at 9 a.m. this Sunday for worship, encouragement, and community—you don’t have to fight alone.”
Oct 26 – Luke 18:9–14 – Pharisee & Tax Collector ➡️ “Sometimes the most honest prayers are the simplest: ‘God, help me.’ This Sunday we’ll explore the difference between showing off and showing up—how humility opens us to grace. Worship at 9 a.m.—you’re welcome just as you are.” |

🌿 Help Us Shape Something New! 🌿
We’re looking at launching an exciting new ministry called The Open Table Gatherings — an event that combines food, creativity, conversation, and worship. It’s designed for all ages, and especially for neighbors who may not connect with traditional church.
Before we begin, we need a Planning Team to help bring this vision to life! We’ll gather for one planning session to dream, brainstorm, and organize the details — everything from creative activity stations to hospitality, meal planning, music, and communications.
👉 If you love welcoming people, cooking, creating, or simply sharing ideas — you have a place on this team. Everyone’s gifts matter.
First Planning Meeting: 📅 Thursday, October 2nd at 6:30 p.m. 📍 Fellowship Center Chapel
Come and help us co-create a ministry that is playful, welcoming, and rooted in God’s love. Together, we’ll set the table for something beautiful!
For more information or to RSVP, contact Rev. Phil at pastorphils@gmail.com or Jon Ruff at jonruff17@gmail.com |
Plattsburgh Cares
The next Emergency Food Bag Project is scheduled for Friday, October 3rd at 2 pm at St. Joseph's Outreach Center, 1349 Military Turnpike, Plattsburgh.
What's involved? Volunteers unload food from cars (that come from the warehouse space we use) and "the closet" at St. Joe's. We set out all the food on tables, assemble about 160 bags, then break down boxes and load bags into cars at the end. We are usually done in about an hour and a half. The bags are then delivered to the Plattsburgh Public Library, the hospital social workers' office, and area motels that work with the Department of Social Services (DSS) to house folks in need of shelter. New volunteers are always welcome! |
| Granny's Attic Sale is Saturday, October 4th from 9 am to 4 pm (THIS Saturday!) |
Thank you to all our volunteers and helpers leading up to the day of our sale!
- Baked goods must be dropped off by 4 pm on Friday or by 8:45 am Saturday.
- Saturday Helpers: Arrive no later than 8:45 am to familiarize yourself with your work area and finalize any changes. We'll share in a prayer before we open the doors promptly at 9 am.
- Coffee hour and 1/2 price sale will be held on Sunday, October 5th from 10 am to 2 pm.
Helpers will be needed next week to clean up, contact thrift shops in the area for delivery/pick-up of left over items, and organize if October 11th bag sale is a "go." Any help you can provide is appreciated. |
 |
In response to this important question, the Council has created a list of priority tasks where your help is most needed.
Thanks to Meg Edwards, who has graciously taken on the work of writing up these tasks, capturing photos, and creating a bulletin board in the Coffee Hour room, you can now easily see where you might lend a hand.
Take a look, pray about it, and see where your gifts and time can make a difference!
You can view the full list of tasks below. |

"Dead Serious About Planning Ahead" At the End, It’s Very Dark… Wait — I think I see a light! I’m somehow moving toward the light and suddenly … softly … Psst…Just so you know: You’re DEAD!
My name is Peter, and I just wanted to let you know what you’re missing. Your family is busy planning for your funeral right now. They’re making decisions you could have helped them with while you were still around. - Cremation or casket?
- Wood or metal?
- What about flowers — never mind that you were allergic.
- Do you already have a plot somewhere that you never told anyone about?
- What kind of headstone do you want?
- And where’s that obituary you were going to write but never did?
So many things they now need to do. You were a Scout once, right? What happened to “Be Prepared”?
I hope I have your attention! What choices do you want to leave behind for your loved ones when you’re gone?
Oh no — we need to get busy with Orientation — apparently there’s a meeting with family and old friends, plus all the dogs and cats are here too (and guess what, no plastic bags required!).
More to come next month — if Peter and I can find a typewriter. Never thought I’d end up a ghost writer…
God Bless, Howard Paul Bell Cemetery Caretaker

Monthly Community Potluck Gatherings |
Join Us on October 26th – Understanding Our Story Together
Dear Church Family,
Our next Monthly Community Gathering is coming up in October, and we warmly invite you to join us. This month’s theme is: “Understanding the System: What Was at Work?”
We’ll take a step back together and reflect on the larger patterns that shaped our life as a congregation—not to assign blame, but to see the bigger picture with wisdom and grace. This Sunday, we’ll learn how to recognize the dynamics that shaped us and imagine ways forward in community.
🕘 Time: Following worship 📍 Location: Fellowship Center 🍽️ Potluck Meal: Bring a dish if you can—your presence matters most!
This is an important time to listen, learn, and grow together as one body in Christ. We believe that by looking honestly at how we’ve functioned as a community, we’ll find new strength and freedom to become who God is calling us to be.
We hope to see you there!
With peace and hope, Your Pastors |
