From Our Pastors Pentecost is Coming |
Friends, May carries us all the way to fire. We begin the month in the quiet unfolding of Easter—buds opening, light lingering, life returning in gentle, almost unnoticed ways. But by the end of May, the story gathers energy. What begins as a whisper of resurrection becomes a rushing wind. What begins in stillness bursts into flame.
Pentecost is coming—May 24.
It is one of the most dramatic moments in our story of faith: the Spirit descending, hearts ignited, voices unleashed, a scattered and uncertain group of disciples becoming a bold and connected community. But Pentecost is more than a spectacle—it is a reorientation of what it means to be the church.
The Spirit does not come to make things comfortable. The Spirit comes to move us. - To push us beyond fear.
- To loosen what has been locked tight.
- To help us speak truth in ways that can actually be heard.
- To remind us that the church was never meant to be static, but alive.
And perhaps most importantly, Pentecost reminds us that God meets people where they are. In that first moment, the good news was heard in many different languages—not erased into sameness, but honored in diversity. The Spirit did not demand uniformity; it created connection.
That matters for us. Because we are living in a time when it is easy to retreat into what is familiar, to draw lines, to speak only to those who already understand us. But the Spirit keeps nudging outward—toward relationship, toward courage, toward a wider vision of community.
Here in our own congregation, we are continuing to grow into that kind of church—one that is rooted in love, open to change, and willing to follow where the Spirit leads, even when the path is not entirely clear. This takes trust. It takes patience. And it takes a willingness to listen—deeply—to one another and to God.
So as we move through this month, I invite you to watch for the Spirit’s movement. - Where is there energy stirring?
- Where are new ideas beginning to take shape?
- Where is there a nudge you’ve been ignoring, or a possibility you’ve been hesitant to explore?
Pentecost is not just something that happened long ago. It is something that continues to happen—whenever people open themselves to the presence and power of the Spirit.
Come, Holy Spirit.
Set our hearts on fire—not for ourselves alone, but for the sake of a world that is longing for hope, justice, and love made real.
Grace and peace, Rev. Phil Richards and Rev. Leigh McCaffrey |

| A Message from Pastor Phil |
Dear Friends,
Grace and peace to you.
I want to share with you an upcoming opportunity in my ministry that I receive with deep gratitude. From April 30 through May 11, I will be away participating in Preachers: Rest. Work. Play., an initiative of United Methodists of Upper New York supported by the Lilly Endowment’s Compelling Preaching Initiative.
This program is rooted in a simple but powerful truth: those who are called to preach and lead also need intentional rhythms of rest, renewal, and reflection. Earlier this year, a group of clergy gathered for this experience and discovered something profound—that what they thought would simply be rest became a deeper awakening to how much renewal they truly needed.
I will be traveling to Alaska as part of this next cohort. This time is not merely a trip, but a sacred invitation to step back from the day-to-day demands of ministry, to listen more deeply for God’s voice, and to return renewed in body, mind, and spirit.
I am grateful for your support in making this possible. Please know that the life and ministry of the church will continue in my absence, and care will be available as needed. If something urgent arises, you may contact the church office or Pastor Leigh McCaffrey and appropriate arrangements will be made.
I look forward to returning with new energy, fresh perspective, and stories to share from this meaningful experience.
Thank you for your prayers, your partnership in ministry, and the grace we extend to one another as we seek to live faithfully.
In Christ’s peace, Rev. Phil Richards |
Renew - Restore - Rebuild: Our Stewardship Vision for 2026/2027
The Annual Stewardship Campaign will begin on May 1st. In the coming days, you will receive a letter along with a support commitment card. We invite you to take a little time in prayer and reflection, considering how you might share your gifts in the year ahead. Your generosity, in whatever form it takes, helps nurture our ministries, care for one another, and extend God’s love into our community.
Support cards should be returned on Sunday, May 17th when we will receive and dedicate the cards. Soon after, the Stewardship Team will build a budget to bring to the Church Council.
Thank you for being such an important part of this shared work.
With blessings, Amanda Corse, Cindi LaFountain, Rev. Leigh McCaffrey & Christina Mullen |
Please fill out our Interest Survey - Let Us Know Where You Want to be Involved! Have you ever asked yourself…
- How can I get more involved at church?
- What can I do to help?
- How can I share my time and talents?
We invite you to complete our Interest Survey! You can fill it out online right HERE or pick up a paper copy and return it to the box near the church entry.
The Church Council will be meeting in May to consider the needs of the church, form teams, and invite people to serve. Your responses will help guide those decisions—especially if you feel called to a particular area of ministry.
Thank you for sharing your gifts with our church community! |

| Our next Food Bag Packing Project will be Friday, May 8th at 10:30am at St. Joseph's Outreach Center, 1349 Military Turnpike, Plattsburgh. What's involved? Volunteers unload food from cars (that come from the warehouse space we use) and "the closet" at St. Joe's.
We set out all the food on tables, assemble bags, then break down boxes and load bags into cars at the end. We are usually done in about an hour. The bags are then delivered to the Plattsburgh Public Library, the hospital social workers' office, and area motels that work with the Department of Social Services (DSS) to house folks in need of shelter.
The food bags were designed to meet the emergency food needs in a motel room setting. The bags also include a small toiletry kit containing shampoo, body wash (soap), toothbrush and toothpaste. We have been blessed with willing volunteers each time - with huge thanks to the April 10th Bag Crew for the 200 bags they packed. |

Dreaming Together: The Future of Children’s & Youth Ministry
Peru Community Church is entering an exciting season of possibility, and we invite you to be part of it.
On Wednesday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m., we will gather for a time of open conversation and creative brainstorming as we begin to restart and reimagine our Children’s and Youth Ministry. This is an opportunity to reflect on what has been, consider the needs of today’s families, and dream about what could be in the future.
We are not starting with a fixed plan—instead, we are starting with a question: What kind of ministry are we being called to create for the children and youth in our community? Your ideas, experiences, and hopes will help shape that answer. Whether you have been involved in children’s ministry before, are a parent or grandparent, or simply care about the next generation, your voice is important. This will be a relaxed and welcoming space to share ideas and imagine new possibilities together.
Come and be part of the conversation as we begin this new chapter. Let us know if you are interested in attending this gathering.
Peace, Phil and Leigh |

Online Study Invitation – Spiritual Defiance
Join us for a three-week online study of Spiritual Defiance, Building a Community of Resistance by Robin Meyers, offered on Zoom Mondays: June 1, 8, and 15. Choose the time that works best for you: 12:30–1:45 p.m. or 6:30–7:45 p.m.
During his thirty-year career as a parish minister and professor, Meyers has challenged the church to rediscover its deeper calling—not as an institution of comfort, but as a community of transformation and courageous resistance. In this provocative and passionate book, he explores the decline of the church as a vibrant community of believers and calls us back to our roots as a movement grounded in justice, compassion, and spiritual depth.
Rather than focusing on theological purity or cultural relevance shaped by marketing strategies, Meyers invites us into what he calls “embodied noncompliance”—a way of living faith that resists systems and patterns that diminish human dignity. Drawing on the poetry of Anna Kamienska, he reframes faith as a force that stands boldly against everything that leads to death, injustice, and despair.
|
| |
This study is an invitation to: • Reclaim the revolutionary spirit of Jesus • Engage faith as a practice of resistance and renewal • Reflect on how we live with courage in a complex world • Deepen our understanding of the church as a Beloved Community
Each session will include guided discussion, reflection, and space for meaningful conversation.
This study serves as the culmination of our online studies for the year. We are exploring the possibility of a special guest conversation with Robin Meyers himself—stay tuned!
Please purchase your copy of the book in advance and begin reading prior to our first session.
All are welcome. Come ready to wrestle, wonder, and reimagine what it means to follow Jesus today. 📅 Dates: June 1, 8, 15 🕛 Time Options: 12:30–1:45 p.m. or 6:30–7:45 p.m. 💻 Location: Zoom
